Czech beer deserves Czech glassware: We are reviving the tradition of Czech crystal beer mugs
We believe that even something as ordinary as a pint glass can be elevated to a work of art thanks to exceptional care and thoughtful design. Although Czechia is a glassmaking powerhouse, pressed beer glasses have not been produced here for two decades – we decided to change that and joined forces with the most qualified experts.
Designers Michal Froněk and Jan Němeček from the Olgoj Chorchoj studio, who also run the D3 Product Design Studio at UMPRUM, gave their students the idea of returning to the tradition of Czech beer mugs. In collaboration with the BOMMA glassworks, they designed and tested twenty prototypes, from which two final models emerged: one for Lokál, the other for Ambiente.
Unique beer glass pressing technology
Thanks to the unique know-how of the glassmakers at BOMMA, the production of the two special beer mugs was a fascinating process – from assembling the three-part mold to dosing the molten glass from the furnace to finding the ideal volume. After pressing, the pint glasses were sent to a series of burners for final polishing and then to a cooling furnace, where internal tension was slowly released over several hours. Annealing prevents spontaneous cracking of the glass and increases its overall durability.
Stress test with bartenders and regulars
We tested the first 150 pints of each model with bartenders and regulars during the summer, then incorporated their comments and produced a batch of 4,000 pieces, which you will be able to find in several restaurants during the winter months: at Lokál Dlouhááá, Lokál Korunní, Kantýna, Kuchyně, and Brasileiro Slovanský dům.
Crystal shine and exceptional durability
Both designs combine aesthetics, functionality, and practicality. The glasses are designed to fit comfortably in your hand, be easy to wash, and be durable enough for everyday use. Genuine Czech crystal gives them exceptional clarity and shine.
